Giving kids clothes and food is one thing, but it’s much more important to teach them that other people besides themselves are important and that the best thing that they can do with their lives is to use them in the service of other people.

When you have a conflict, that means that there are truths that have to be addressed on each side of the conflict. And when you have a conflict, then it’s an educational process to try to resolve the conflict. And to resolve that, you have to get people on both sides of the conflict involved so that they can dialogue.

April Topics

Welcome Spring 2021!  Remembering our hearts one year ago today we are filled with humbled, reflective and joyful energy to share with your children each day as we soak up spring together and prepare children for the closing of our school year in June.  Our upcoming months will be focused on more projects and longer extensions to lessons as well as preparing children for next school environments.  

• Peace Maker, Nobel Peace Prize Winner Dr.Wangari Maathai.  April 1 is Dr. Wangari’s birthday.   We honor this wonderful woman’s work for African women, children and the environment as well as the globe.  We tell Dr.Maathai’s life story in an age appropriate storytelling and now a new children’s book about her life–in the book we read, there is a section regarding her imprisonment.  We had a deep conversation regarding the tools used in that illustration (handgun and baton) to frighten her, to stop doing her earth work.  We made emphasis on her bravery and her circle of support from others who supported her work and person, to get her out of jail.   We ended our two day discussion with questions of what makes us feel safe during big imaginative play with friends and how do you offer peace to the earth.  The insight was listed and will be photographed for our April google photos folder.  We decided as a group to use safe words at school because school is meant to be a safe space.  Additional words you possibly will hear at home: trees, women, babies, money, planting, poor/no food for the babies or families, soil, water, helping one another.  A wonderful educational reference giving tribute to Dr.Maathai’s work is from Project Learning Tree is at http://www.plt.org/words-to-live-by—a-tribute-to-wangari-maathai 

It’s the little things citizens do.  That’s what will make the difference. My little thing is planting trees.

Education, if it means anything, should not take people away from the land, but instill in them even more respect for it, because educated people are in a position to understand what is being lost.  The future of the planet concerns all of us, and all of us should do what we can to protect it.  As I told the foresters, and the women, you don’t need a diploma to plant a tree.

There are opportunities even in the most difficult moments.

I’m very conscious of the fact that you can’t do it alone.  It’s teamwork.  When you do it alone you run the risk that when you are no longer there nobody else will do it.

• Water Conservation: Learning through introduction and practice of water fetching, uses and conserving water and the importance of fresh, clean water and how we can help.

• Circle Showcase & Puppets: Opportunity for children, one at a time, to bravely enter the circle to tell a joke, dance, act, sing, silly movements or impersonation during circle as well as puppets.  Following each showcase we clap and celebrate the person’s bravery.  Like all spring life surrounding us, our class is popping with activity, interest and movement.   At the end of the day we might do group stretching and we also might create group story telling.  

• Please, Thank you, Pardon Me & More Grace and Courtesy Daily:  Learning safe practices of COVID19, distancing aware methods to connect and show our grace and courtesy to the world.  A fun and practical request for Grace and Courtesy as well as practice of connecting. With our deeper work with communication, our circles will focus on listening games to practice exploring what listening is, how to listen to self and groups.  Songs, role-play of manners and facial expression/body language practice.

• Parts of a Flower, Trees, Amphibians: roots, stem, leaf, corolla (pedal), stamen, pistol using our class microscope at the science table.  Our class will begin exploring more of the plants and amphibian life in and outside of the garden and using much more scientific vocabulary as well as labeling the plants with the names and if edible or non-edible.  In April we will gather dandelion and kale greens for class salads the children will make.  We will begin using our class microscope and mixing Spanish vocabulary alongside English.  

• Relationship of pollinators and flowers & Beautiful Insects: Butterfly life cycle, bees, Robins, hummingbirds and beginning observation of Painted Lady larva to butterfly process.  Thank you for your help at home welcoming conversations about insects and their importance in our ecosystems.

• Earth Day: varying earth month projects honoring discussion of how we all are Earth Peacekeepers and focus on renewable and reusable resources and water conservation activities and art.  

• Peace Pole: Please donate colorful, long ribbon for the garden peace pole.  

• Incredible Peace Makers of Central and South America & Introduction to Spain and Spanish Practice with Guillermo’s Papa Carlos!

Reminders:

No School: Spring Break 5th-9th

• Please all toys from home to stay at home until it is your child’s Sharing Bag day.  

We have asked children to move more fluidly to cars at pickup and refrain from play outside of the garden at pickup so we can have more parking available as well as lighten neighborhood traffic.  Due to the quick turnaround of school hours, we are asking to have social time met at KVI or waterfront instead of on our property.  Thank you for this help. 

• Please help children maintain masks that cover their nose and mouth over the break and coming back to school, as well as independence practices with clothing and self care.  

We are seeking to expand our team and hire an official Montessori Assistant for our school environment, we are filled with fantastic Specialist Teachers and seek to create space for classroom Montessori Assistant wonders beside me to feel out if this is a profession to follow and how we can best support that growth and sustainable team creation.  Thank you for referring us to your referrals of a bilingual, energetic person passionate about Early Education!  The magic always occurs from the people we are lucky to know and trust.  Thank you for being that for us, we look forward to this special process!

• Volunteer Opportunities:

• White tee-shirts for your child(ren) and anything else you want tie dyed, let’s get them to us by April 15th please.  We will tie dye Klahanie School tee-shirts in May!  

• Parents volunteer to learn from Kate to start helping us set-up Klahanie School’s annual logo-ed tie dyed tee-shirts (helping setup ordering from a distributor or finding someone on island to help administer the process).  

• Pie Auction committee, this includes curating pies, setup/cleanup, serving and finding a fantastic BBQ-er for our 6ft long mega bbq for some incredible fun to create for our scholarships!

• Help Toby & Gillian frame the class made art to auction for the fundraiser. 

March 2021 Reflection

Happy Spring!  This month has brought us many wonderful opportunities in and outside the classroom.  We were able to expand our outside play space to the east end of the property (county owned and we will maintain) where we have fun and much dirt moving, digging and creation opportunities.  We then explored the importance of planting on hillsides and awareness of erosion and how to help prevent.  We also began exploring transplanting times and how to support plants during that process.  The children’s self-initiate outside imagination is rich and many are using the dress-up and Garden Stage.   This has allowed wonderful practice of listening opportunities as well as initiative for talking-listening rock to figure out taking turns with spaces.  The group is offering fantastic improv opportunities.  Our PM class has created the most inspiring levels of therapeutic, dramatic play that is full of creativity, inclusion and pure fun!  We have started woodworking a bit and will branch more and more into the spring months with woodworking fun practice and introduction.

Thank you Gillian and Toby for the incredible Self Portraits process with children!  These will be hanging in the East classroom window when back from Spring Break to enjoy.

Son las pequeñas cosas que hacen los ciudadanos. Eso es lo que marcará la diferencia. Mi cosita es plantar árboles.

La educación, si significa algo, no debe alejar a las personas de la tierra, sino inculcarles aún más respeto por ella, porque las personas educadas están en condiciones de comprender lo que se está perdiendo. El futuro del planeta nos concierne a todos y todos debemos hacer todo lo posible para protegerlo. Como les dije a los silvicultores ya las mujeres, no se necesita un diploma para plantar un árbol.

Hay oportunidades incluso en los momentos más difíciles.

Soy muy consciente del hecho de que no puedes hacerlo solo. Es trabajo en equipo. Cuando lo haces solo corres el riesgo de que cuando ya no estés nadie más lo haga.

Bienvenidos a la primavera de 2021! Recordando nuestros corazones hace un año, hoy estamos llenos de energía humilde, reflexiva y alegre para compartir con sus hijos cada día que empapamos de primavera juntos y preparamos a los niños para el cierre de nuestro año escolar en junio. Nuestros próximos meses se centrarán en más proyectos y extensiones más largas de las lecciones, así como en la preparación de los niños para los próximos entornos escolares.  

• Pacificador, Premio Nobel de la Paz Dr. Wangari Maathai. El 1 de abril es el cumpleaños del Dr. Wangari. Honramos el trabajo de esta maravillosa mujer por las mujeres africanas, los niños y el medio ambiente, así como el mundo. Contamos la historia de la vida de la doctora Maathai en una narración apropiada para su edad y ahora un nuevo libro para niños sobre su vida; en el libro que leemos, hay una sección sobre su encarcelamiento. • Por favor, gracias, Perdóname y más Gracia y cortesía todos los días: Aprendiendo prácticas seguras de COVID19, distanciando métodos conscientes para conectar y mostrar nuestra gracia y cortesía al mundo. Canciones, juego de roles de modales y expresión facial / práctica del lenguaje corporal. Una petición divertida y práctica para los buenos, la gracia y la cortesía, así como la práctica de conectarse. Con nuestro trabajo más profundo con la comunicación, nuestros círculos se centrarán en los juegos de escuchar para practicar la exploración de lo que es escuchar, cómo escucharse a sí mismo y a los grupos.  

• Partes de una flor, árboles, anfibios: raíces, tallo, hoja, corola (pedal), estambre, pistola usando nuestro microscopio de clase en la mesa de ciencias. Nuestra clase comenzará a explorar más plantas dentro y fuera del jardín y usará mucho más vocabulario científico, así como etiquetará las plantas con los nombres y si son comestibles o no comestibles. • Relación de polinizadores y flores e insectos hermosos: ciclo de vida de las mariposas, abejas, petirrojos, colibríes y observación inicial de la larva de Painted Lady al proceso de la mariposa.

• Día de la Tierra: diferentes proyectos del mes de la tierra que honran la discusión de cómo todos somos Pacificadores de la Tierra y nos enfocamos en los recursos renovables y reutilizables y las actividades de conservación del agua y el arte.  

• Poste de la paz: por favor done una cinta larga y colorida para el poste de la paz del jardín.  

• ¡Increíbles pacificadores de América Central y del Sur e Introducción a España y práctica del español con el Papa Carlos de Guillermo!

Recordatorios:

• No hay clases: Vacaciones de primavera del 5 al 9

• Todos los juguetes de la casa para quedarse en casa por favor hasta que sea el día de la bolsa para compartir de su hijo. Estamos haciendo esos recordatorios y solicitudes directamente a sus hijos para que ayuden.

• Por favor, ayude a los niños a mantener máscaras que cubran su nariz y boca durante el descanso y el regreso a la escuela, así como prácticas de independencia con la ropa y el cuidado personal; gracias por esta ayuda, sentirá las recompensas a medida que avanzamos en la primavera.

• Ayúdenos a apoyar a los niños que mantienen conexiones amorosas y el uso de mostrar su amor con sus cuerpos en un distanciamiento seguro COVID19. Como escuela, debemos cumplir con las regulaciones estatales y apoyar a las familias a formar formas seguras de fomentar las conexiones fuera del espacio escolar. Hemos animado a los niños a que soliciten cortésmente encuentros en la playa y otras ideas para jugar al aire libre. • Estamos buscando expandir nuestro equipo y contratar un Asistente Montessori oficial para nuestro entorno escolar, estamos llenos de maestros especialistas fantásticos y buscamos crear espacio para que el Asistente Montessori en el aula se pregunte a mi lado para sentir si esta es una profesión a seguir y cómo podemos apoyar mejor ese crecimiento y la creación de equipos sostenibles. ¡Gracias por recomendarnos sus referencias de una persona joven y enérgica apasionada por la educación temprana! La magia siempre proviene de las personas que tenemos la suerte de conocer y en las que confiamos. ¡Gracias por ser eso para nosotros, esperamos este proceso especial!
