Reminders/Thank You

November Unit Topics

  • Indigenous Salish Sea life: looking back to the ways of how and why the indigenous peoples accessed Vashon Island, specifically in our Ellisport-Klahanie beach land and waters: what was harvested and when and what kind of life was experienced.
  • Islands, Togetherness, Community Within & With Others: Exploring what an island is and other land and water masses using songs, poetry, storytelling we will explore being a true Neighbor to one another.   PeaceMaker Fred Rogers’ work will be prominently featured this month and every month, as well as honoring Chief Sealth of Suquamish  (please checkout the Suquamish tribal center and his birth and burial site) with beautiful quotes and age appropriate honoring of the reasons behind indigenous Earth guide.

How our words are understood doesn’t depend just on how we express our ideas.  It also depends on how someone receives what we’re saying.  I think the most important part about communicating is the listening we do beforehand.  When we can truly respect what someone brings to what we;re offering, it makes the communication all the more meaningful….

  • Salmon: amazing life cycle journey, Pacific Northwest salmon and habitats.  This is a very dear unit and we read some amazing books and poetry about the salmon’s inspiring life.  Please contact Vashon Nature Center co-director Maria Metler (dear friend and previous Klahanie nature specialist) for respectful observation sites.  There are some great ones on the island and when introducing so much zoology and botany, we also incorporate grace and courtesy of all living things.  That includes how to act as scientists using our observation eye, ears and noses when witnessing other methods of life.  This does not include touch.  I ask that very clearly as part of our empathy exploration and the idea of stepping into another’s perspective and request to be alert on numerous levels of practicalities that can also assist in safety experience exploration (non-edible or poison items, delicate habitats or terrain, etc).   • Giving Thanks: exploring ways to express our thanks to those we love and the earth.  Before our Thanksgiving break we will make a Class Thanksgiving meal as a class over a couple of days, set our table, sing a Thank You song and eat our meal together while teachers serve and Emmy reads Jonathan London’s Giving Thanks.  The meal will be evergreen huckleberry, blueberry and apple sauces (picked, peeled cooked by the children, a bit of honey added), smoked salmon and dairy and eggless cornbread muffins.  All food, with the exception of the curing of salmon is made by the class.  This is a very sweet couple of days.

Dad believes that the things of nature are a gift.  And that in return, we must give something back.  We must give thanks…..

To me, it’s a little embarrassing to say thanks to trees and things.  But Dad says it becomes a habit; it makes you feel good.  ‘Thank you, stars,’ I say as we near home.  And the stars come out, one by one, as if from hiding.

October 2020 Reflection

Thank you parents and children for such wonderful conferences, what fun sharing about your children.   The richness of the time and the richness of where your children are in life is such a cherished honor for us to witness and support.  Thank you for the bravery of openness and kindness to build a better world for our children by listening and being so patient, present in the life movements and massive daily changes.  As shared during conferences, your children make a kind and inviting group.  The leaves are changing and the rain has re-emerged, autumn is fully here.  Inside and outside the children are exploring new friendships and with that we are able to support the natural and normal relationship dynamics playing out and figuring out how to open our listening ears and learning to speak from the heart, and what defines a kind leader.  We teachers are taking a lot of time to help the children figure out joyful ways to connect with friends and introducing mediation “holding our concentration” complimented with movement stories.   There is a great amount of kindness offered and received during class daily.  The main focus we leave them with is how kind they are.  We explore together that kindness and gratitude will lead to a joyful life on earth and possibility greater connection with others and earth.  We continue to build our empathy development with inquiry and listening along with important grace and courtesy responses to friends’ questions and actions.  

Thank you parents for dressing your kids so weather ready with warm layers and easy to slip on boots!  Thank you also for practicing with your child at home ways to put clothing and coats on independently.  We use the following technique at school:

“You put your tag by your toes, hands in the holes and you flip it over your head.” flipping the coat on by laying the coat upside down by the child’s toes.

PREPARING FOR COLD DAYS for AM and PM classes: Please continue layering and packing rain pants and for cubbies, with the following (name labeled on tags and in bags)

1.  X2 pairs of sweatpants

2. 1 hoodie or sweatshirt/sweater

3. Hand wear (mismatched socks work great!) or name labeled waterproof work gloves

4. Underwear/Long-johns/socks

5. Hat

6. Extra socks

On Going Class Goodness:

  • Study and observation of the three woodpeckers and winter birds arriving and who frequent our garden: Downy headed,  Pileated and Flicker, Chickadee.  Following winter solstice, we focus on native Ellisport winter small birds, owls and eagles.  
  • Gillian and Toby (Griffin and Raffa’s Mamas), will pop-in for outdoor art projects in our unit studies periodically to share their incredible artistic gifts with the children!  And thank you Toby for donating gluten free play dough the children will have small, individual amounts to use and store in class.  
  • Fantastic Jasper (teacher Austin’s daughter) will be helping us on Tuesdays in class to witness the flow and interactions of students and teachers in our Early Education setting.  Please find her bio here:

My name is Jasper Merrill, teacher Austin’s daughter!

I am 20 years old and go to The Evergreen State College where I am learning about psychology and art.

I enjoy photography, drawing, and film. I also work at the Vashon pharmacy and have lived on Vashon most of my life. 

I love our small community and I look forward to working with the kids at Klahanie Montessori for my student volunteer project.

Below is a Story-Play from our Monday, Tuesday PM Elementary Pikachu Schnauzer Group 

The Terrifying Schnauzer Dragons

Part 1 

    One relaxing afternoon Kai and Mr. Austin were relaxing on a bench in front of a local Hotel waiting for the bus.  

Suddenly, Kai said, “Mr. Austin, what’s that?”

Mr. Austin looked up.  It was a Schnauzer Dragon, the most fierce beast in the land. 

“That’s a Schnauzer Dragon!  We have to dial 9111 for Emergency Dragon Help!  The Dragon Police will come and transport this foul beasts back to LaLa Land where they came from.”  

Mr. Austin dialed for help.

“What’s your problem?” said the dispatcher on the other side of the receiver.  

“Emergency, emergency we have Schnauzer Dragons!”

“That’s horrible!” said the dispatcher on the other end.  “We will send our best Team consisting of: two monkeys, two karate bears, and two humans armed with their bicycle powered helicopter.”  

“Thank you very much.” said Mr. Austin.  Moments later, the team didn’t land gently (actually they crashed) and greeted Kai and Mr. Austin.

“Hello” they said.  “One of those foul beasts attacked our helicopter.  Karate Bear 1 popped it in the snout and it flew off.” 

“Lets Go!” said Kai.

“Here use these.” said one officer.  “We will use this giant net to catch them and move them to LaLa Land onto the top of Firefly Hill.

Part 2

As the entire crew lifted off in their bicycle helicopter, the Schnauzer Dragons paused to look at them.  They’d never seen a bicycle helicopter, let alone a real helicopter.  As the team drew near they started to get the nets ready.  The Schnauzer Dragons smelled the danger because they started flying in even quicker circles than before, breathing fireballs at the helicopter.  Kai and Mr. Austin held up one side of the net and the police held up the other side.  The helicopter made a sharp turn in mid air and they swiftly caught the Dragons in their net.

Mr. Austin pointed and said, “Look they are crying!  We need them back to LaLa Land quickly!”  The officers agreed, “The fastest way to get there is the portal of silliness.”

The officers then pulled the slab of the helicopter back revealing a swirl of colors with the sound of laughter coming out of it.  

“First I need to set the coordinates,” said the officer.  “Kai can you help?”

“Sure,” said Kai.   Kai punched in coordinates 999333 while the officer activated the entry way into the portal.  

“Now you can go into the portal Little Schnauzer Dragons” as they all removed the net.  The Schnauzer Dragons bounded into the portal but not before saying “Thank you” in the Schnauzer Dragons language which sounds like “MROOF”.

“I hope you don’t have any more Schnauzer Dragons problems for a while,” said Kai.  And the officer silently agreed.

  • Salmón: increíble viaje por el ciclo de vida, salmón del noroeste del Pacífico y hábitats. Esta es una unidad muy querida y leímos algunos libros y poesía increíbles sobre la vida inspiradora del salmón. Comuníquese con la codirectora del Vashon Nature Center, Maria Metler (querida amiga y anterior especialista en naturaleza de Klahanie) para conocer los sitios de observación respetuosos. Todos los alimentos, con la excepción de la curación del salmón, son elaborados por la clase. Este es un par de días muy dulces.

Papá cree que las cosas de la naturaleza son un regalo. Y eso a cambio, debemos devolver algo. Debemos dar gracias …

Para mí, es un poco vergonzoso agradecer a los árboles y esas cosas. Pero papá dice que se convierte en un hábito; te hace sentir bien. —Gracias, estrellas —digo mientras nos acercamos a casa. Y las estrellas salen, una a una, como si se escondieran.

Octubre de 2020 Reflexión

Gracias padres e hijos para conferencias tan maravillosas, qué divertido compartir sobre sus hijos. La riqueza del tiempo y la riqueza del lugar en que se encuentran sus hijos en la vida es un honor tan preciado para nosotros de presenciar y apoyar. Gracias por la valentía de la apertura y la amabilidad para construir un mundo mejor para nuestros niños escuchando y siendo tan pacientes, presentes en los movimientos de la vida y los cambios masivos diarios. Como se compartió durante las conferencias, sus hijos forman un grupo amable y acogedor. Las hojas están cambiando y la lluvia ha resurgido, el otoño está completamente aquí. Dentro y fuera, los niños están explorando nuevas amistades y con eso podemos apoyar la dinámica de la relación natural y normal que se desarrolla y descubrir cómo abrir nuestros oídos para escuchar y aprender a hablar desde el corazón, y qué define a un líder amable. Nosotros, los maestros, nos tomamos mucho tiempo para ayudar a los niños a encontrar formas divertidas de conectarse con amigos e introducir la mediación “mantener nuestra concentración” complementada con historias de movimiento. Hay una gran cantidad de amabilidad ofrecida y recibida durante la clase todos los días. El enfoque principal que les dejamos es lo amables que son. Exploramos juntos que la bondad y la gratitud conducirán a una vida feliz en la tierra y la posibilidad de una mayor conexión con los demás y la tierra. Continuamos construyendo nuestro desarrollo de empatía con preguntas y escuchando junto con importantes respuestas de cortesía y gracia a las preguntas y acciones de nuestros amigos.  

Gracias padres por vestir a sus hijos para que estén listos para el clima con capas cálidas ¡Y botas fáciles de poner! Gracias también por practicar con su hijo en casa maneras de ponerse la ropa y los abrigos de forma independiente. Usamos la siguiente técnica en la escuela:

“Pones tu etiqueta junto a los dedos de los pies, las manos en los agujeros y la volteas sobre tu cabeza”. Ponerse el abrigo colocando el abrigo boca abajo por los dedos de los pies del niño.

PREPARACIÓN PARA LOS DÍAS FRÍOS para las clases de la mañana y la tarde: Continúe colocando capas y empacando pantalones para la lluvia y para los cubículos, con lo siguiente (el nombre está etiquetado en las etiquetas y en las bolsas)

1. X2 pares de pantalones deportivos

2. 1 sudadera con capucha o sudadera / suéter

3. Mano Use (calcetines que no combinen muy bien!) o guantes de trabajo impermeables etiquetados con el nombre

4. Ropa interior / calzoncillos largos / calcetines

5. Sombrero

6. Calcetines adicionales

En clase Bondad:

  • Estudio y observación de los tres pájaros carpinteros y aves de invierno que llegan y que frecuentan nuestra jardín: Cabeza vellosa, Pileated y Flicker, Chickadee. Después del solsticio de invierno, nos centramos en los pájaros pequeños, los búhos y las águilas nativos de Ellisport.  
  • ¡Gillian Doepeke y Toby Leibowitz (Griffin y las mamás de Raffa), aparecerán periódicamente para proyectos de arte al aire libre en nuestra unidad de estudios para compartir sus increíbles dones artísticos con los niños! Y gracias Toby por donar plastilina sin gluten, los niños tendrán pequeñas cantidades individuales para usar y almacenar en clase.  
  • El fantástico Jasper Merrill (la hija del maestro Austin) nos ayudará los martes en clase a presenciar el flujo y las interacciones de estudiantes y maestros en nuestro entorno de educación temprana. Encuentre su biografía aquí:

Los terribles dragones Schnauzer

Parte 1 

    Una tarde de relajación, Kai y el Sr. Austin se estaban relajando en un banco frente a un hotel local esperando el autobús.  

De repente, Kai dijo: “Sr. Austin, ¿qué es eso?

El Sr. Austin miró hacia arriba. Era un dragón Schnauzer, la bestia más feroz de la tierra. 

“¡Es un dragón Schnauzer! ¡Tenemos que marcar el 9111 para obtener ayuda de Emergency Dragon! La Policía Dragón vendrá y transportará a estas horribles bestias de regreso a LaLa Land de donde vinieron “.  

El Sr. Austin llamó para pedir ayuda.

“¿Cuál es tu problema?” dijo el despachador al otro lado del receptor.  

“¡Emergencia, emergencia tenemos dragones Schnauzer!”

“¡Esto es horrible!” dijo el despachador en el otro extremo. “Enviaremos nuestro mejor equipo compuesto por: dos monos, dos osos de karate y dos humanos armados con su helicóptero propulsado por una bicicleta”.  

“Muchas gracias.” dijo el Sr. Austin. Momentos después, el equipo no aterrizó suavemente (en realidad se estrellaron) y saludó a Kai y al Sr. Austin.

“Hola”, dijeron. “Una de esas horribles bestias atacó nuestro helicóptero. Karate Bear 1 se lo metió en el hocico y salió volando “. 

“¡Vamonos!” dijo Kai.

“Aquí usa estos”. dijo un oficial. “Usaremos esta red gigante para atraparlos y moverlos a LaLa Land en la cima de Firefly Hill.

Parte 2

Cuando toda la tripulación despegó en su helicóptero bicicleta, los dragones Schnauzer se detuvieron para mirarlos. Nunca habían visto un helicóptero en bicicleta, y mucho menos un helicóptero real. A medida que el equipo se acercaba, empezaron a preparar las redes. Los dragones Schnauzer olieron el peligro porque comenzaron a volar en círculos aún más rápidos que antes, lanzando bolas de fuego al helicóptero. Kai y el Sr. Austin levantaron un lado de la red y la policía sostuvo el otro lado. El helicóptero hizo un giro brusco en el aire y rápidamente atrapó a los Dragones en su red.

El Sr. Austin señaló y dijo: “¡Mira, están llorando! ¡Los necesitamos de regreso a LaLa Land rápidamente! ” Los oficiales estuvieron de acuerdo: “La forma más rápida de llegar es el portal de la tontería”.

Luego, los oficiales tiraron de la losa del helicóptero hacia atrás, revelando un remolino de colores del que salía el sonido de la risa.  

“Primero necesito establecer las coordenadas”, dijo el oficial. “Kai, ¿puedes ayudar?”

“Claro,” dijo Kai. Kai marcó las coordenadas 999333 mientras el oficial activaba la entrada al portal.  

“Ahora puedes entrar en el portal Little Schnauzer Dragons” ya que todos sacaron la red. Los Dragones Schnauzer entraron al portal pero no sin antes decir “Gracias” en el idioma de los Dragones Schnauzer que suena como “MROOF”.

“Espero que no tengas más problemas con Schnauzer Dragons por un tiempo”, dijo Kai. Y el oficial accedió en silencio.
