Independent, Multiage Specialized Schooling Impacted and Moving to New Reality Assessments during these Uncertain Times

Due to extremely low enrollment numbers currently, and possible projections for the 2026-2027, there is a very realistic outlook that Klahanie School will need to assess if closing doors for a pause or indefinitely is a route necessary. If our school is unable to enroll four more children into our 2026-2027 multiage class, we will need to re-assess if the nonprofit can employ even one teacher while paying for all the necessary expenses when running an Early Education school space for children under the age of six.

The national administration impacting families financially, directly impacts independent schooling sites as well in this negative ripple, and within our insulated community. Multiage spaces that hold necessary foundational-pedagogy strategies for literacy fluencies in varying areas of developmental growths, and programs impacted due to families experiencing the fiscal cuts are now holding understandable fear regarding their monthly finances. Intimate, independent schools are the first to close when families cannot commit due to financial strains and uncertainties. Klahanie School does not have the bandwidth investment or staffing abilities for large community fundraisers due to lack of fundings, and each year our donors have dwindled stating they cannot afford to donate or choose one of the many other island non-profits to place necessary donations.

This equation also does not allow room for two to three year commitment dependent-student focused, and strategized multiage pedagogy schools such as certified Montessori, Waldorf and The Reggio Emilia learning environments, as student based-specialized service in community to sustain.

In short, the upcoming 2026 winter months will highlight directions our school must take moving forward and if teachers will need to look elsewhere for livelihood securities. Thank you for referrals to families seeking high quality, consistent, engaging education years for their early learner at Klahanie School.

If you have financial securities and place annual donations during your holiday season, thank you for your donation consideration to Klahanie School during this very uncertain time and adding a bit of padding moving forward.
