Happy sun and weekend Klahanie School Families,
Friendly reminder that there is no school Monday October 9th to honor, observe National Indigenous Day. No school Tuesday October 10th for staff inservice day.
Conference days in November, we have normal school hours, conferences are administered after school.
Monday, 90.3 KEXP is hosting an all day Indigenous Day music honoring and hosted by two local DJs featuring great orgs and projects around our state supporting Indigenous rights and life. Wishing you all a great weekend and looking forward to sharing more deep dives from the current autumn Antibias Antiracism AMS course to certification I am honored to participate in, and affirming a lifelong work. Learning Links are included in your attached October newsletter.
Next week we begin painting self portraits with skin explorations. The class is excited to create portraits into their individually picked animals they admire and take inspiration from. Teachers will be brave beside them and create as well. Have fun checking out your child’s incredibly drawn self portraits in the lower class window! Art expression is alive and well at Klahanie School and our units are rich with fun! Please watch for information about Family Story Boards coming up.
Please note in the attachments the upcoming November dates and Year Long Intersession/Holiday no school days to start plans with your child, Klahanie School parents, extended care, your extended families to organize your added support. Also please begin to talk to your child about these necessary breaks for teachers to learn and better the school environment for them and your families. And counting the days, exploring calendars, talking about on-going routines so they know when returning and how to establish bravery goals to play with when re-entering school following a break.
Best quote and question asked yesterday to leave you with:
“Teacher Emmy, why does the world need teachers to be teachers?”
My response, “For survival and how to thrive in this world I suppose. Teachers are mentors, for many of us we want to feel safe advocates for your learning. We need to learn from one another, and time is needed to learn from those with some expertises to watch-observe, try and practice until we can take that lesson to our own understanding and bring clarity and creativity. That is why I love Montessori teaching, because I get to learn beside you and classmates everyday and practice alongside you how to learn about this big, beautiful world and do it each time with a little better feeling and a little more clarity.”
Thank you to those who have offered to volunteer support in the areas listed below, deep gratitude.

……………………………………
Dear Klahanie Parents,
We are settled into the school year and have spots remaining that we desperately need to fill. Please help your school community maintain high quality connections with students by maintaining our teaching staff hours and post/advertise the attachments to social media and other family environments/ spaces.
We have had to reduce and adjust to the climate of enrollment to maintain, knowing we all are facing obstacles right now, we need your help.
This week I had to resign from the DOVE Project/ Sisterhood Circles active immediately due to Klahanie School’s low enrollment and requiring us to re-evaluate staffing schedules. Toby will be moving to once a month Art Specialist as a ripple to this as well and teachers have had unfortunate reduction of hours. We have already cut rent since August and cannot make any more cuts without negatively impacting our school-nonprofit functions.
Here is how you can help with referrals and resources:
* SEEKING SUSTAINABLE DONORS.
* FILLING TWO-to-THREE MORE SPOTS in either class
* Help finding and submitting grants
* Setting up bake sales and other fundraisers to supplement costs
* Help posting on social media regularly in support of the school and spots to fill.
* Keep Vashon Thriftway receipts pouring in (1% program)–collect from family and write you name and phone numbers on the top of receipts.
* Help post and advertise for NOVEMBER 28TH #GivingTuesday
* Help create a BeachComber writeup feature for Klahanie School–we are a unicorn in this community! Let’s sparkle out this year!
* Message to the community that we are the only verified AMS (found on their website!) Early Childhood school on Vashon-Maury Island. Important to Know: Montessori is a name and used as public domain, meaning some spaces advertise as Montessori without the training or certifications. Please be encouraged to make sure and check on the AMS website whenever researching Montessori schools.
Many thanks and best of luck to us as we begin grant interviews and proud of the safe space environment we provide our youth and communities, we adapt resiliently towards the opportunities presented from daily life curves and dips.
Warmly, Emmy
